WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
I love the visual component of matchbooks, the choice of colors from restaurants/establishments — especially hidden details inside, for example @lerocknyc, @nickfouquet, and @shopquarters are super unique and reveal more as you use them. I also prefer using matches over lighters, and find them to be great conversation starters!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
I have a few, but my top two favorites are the custom ones I made for me and my boyfriend’s apartment in Nolita for friends to take when they come over (or need to light up a cigarette on our fire escape), and the sterling silver matchbox with the turquoise detail that I picked up from a tiny boutique in Topanga. I got one for my dad as well and it makes me smile to see it out on display in his music room back in Jersey.
WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?
I love trading and sharing the matches I have collected over the years with friends. I keep my duplicates in this big ceramic brick box on my kitchen counter (that my very talented sister @studiolo_artale made), and they’ll rummage through and take the matches they are missing from their own collection! I try to keep max 10 matches on my coffee table at a time, and that consists of the places I love (i.e @bondstnyc, Bemelmans Bar at @rosewoodthecarlyle, Torrisi, @thegrillny, @themulberrybar etc.)
