WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
To keep a fun record of places I've been that are memorable. And I love seeing the creativity in matchbook covers—it’s a tiny yet powerful design moment.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
I have several from places in NYC that are sentimental to me for one reason or another and I haven't used them at all in order to preserve them. @petestavernnyc where I lived around the corner from for 5 years, or @themermaidnyc which has one of my favorite illustrated matchbook designs. I love the @maisonpremiere matchbox, it felt fancy enough to display in the bathroom and to make an illustration out of it!
WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?
To light candles with. It makes it more of a ceremony, I always feel like it's cheating if I use a lighter instead of a match. Although admittedly I've used lighters a lot more recently, since another unfortunate outcome of the pandemic has been that my matchbook collection has seriously dwindled. A lot more time at home has meant a lot more candles burned and nearly no new restaurants to visit to replenish my stash. Hoping that will change soon!
