WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
I love that matches act as a remnant of past travels, meals, adventures, conversations with people I love. As sort of a graphics and design enthusiast, I always pay attention to how matches reflect the aesthetic of their respective establishments. I also think there is something exciting about carrying matches around with you and how that could open you up to meet a stranger asking for a light. I think in that way, matches symbolize chance encounters in my mind. The spontaneity of an encounter like that is very alluring to me.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
Like for many people, I would imagine, my first trip to Paris was incredibly special. These matches from @hotelcostes remind me of that time when everything was brand new and every detail felt magical. Beyond that, I think there is nothing more beautiful than the female form, so the motif to me is just perfect. If you know me, you know that @theodeonnyc is my favorite restaurant in the world. It is such a Manhattan staple, everyone has heard of it, and the restaurant’s branding is simple and clean. My parents got married at City Hall in 1990 and then had their wedding party at The Odeon. Allegedly, they really brought the place down. For me, there is no place more romantic. These matches make me think of life’s great loves, and New York—and The Odeon—feel like one of my life’s great loves. I smile every time I look at them.
WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?
My apartment has and always will be full of trinkets. Candles, postcards, art, records, magazines and matches lay just about everywhere in my living room. One of the ways I’ve started to display my matches is by putting them in glass vases. I love the way they look sitting on my bar cart next to my favorite glassware.
