WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
Matches are one of my favorite things to design; they are kind of antiquated, not technically needed anymore, yet forever beloved by everyone. The definition of luxury! In my studio they are also our platform to have fun, to take more freedom; it's a bit of a bonus, that is not the first thing people see (unlike a menu or outdoor sign) but the only thing people might take home and keep in their living room for years.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
Hard to pick but I will always have a soft spot for the large format @diptyque ones, which were always on my parents’ coffee table growing up in France. The imagery on it would change from a box to another but it was always so elegant, with an analog quality to it. Since then, I’ve always wondered why not every matchbox is that large, so much more functional! My all time favorite matchbook is the one from @sauvage_nyc, designed by @triborodesign, one of my favorite graphic design studios. Then the ones Grace Diebel and I designed together at my former studio, The MP Shift, for Edward Dwelling-Williams’ bakery @lepetitgrainparis. We created beautiful textures by imbibing sourdough bread with ink, playing with different levels of saturation and stamping it. Lastly, the large constellation matches from HomArt.
