WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?

They’re like a time stamp! I was just talking to a friend of mine yesterday about what accessibility means in the context of media — matches being a form of one. I feel like they’ve always been around but lost some traction along the way. But there’s a new longing for the past. Vintage is the new, and matches have an infinite potential as a medium. They are a powerful form of branding, after all, you don’t take a menu home with you, no? The possibilities are endless.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?

My favorite one is @wiltons1742 in London. It’s a super traditional, as-classic-as-it-gets restaurant located at the heart of Mayfair. I grew up going there every time I was in London with my grandparents and to me, it represented the quality time I so longed for since I lived in Europe and they in Latin America. Most of the things I was lucky enough to learn about their lives, I learned there; my grandmother and I excited about the sweet pea purée. I always found it funny how such a serious, elegant restaurant would choose such a comical and approachable lobster as their front. Whisky and cigar in hand, of course!

WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?

Ah, nostalgia! Whenever I’m reading, listening to music, feeling like I want to dive into memories… there’s an infinite scope of design and typography yet such little available space. It’s fascinating to see how not one is alike and the use of layout and color. I always think about the person who designed the match and think to myself, I wonder if it was clear to them how they wanted it to look from the start? It’s just stimulating to see the variation of design and empowering to be able to pick favorites (and discard others). It’s personal and subjective, and that’s ok!
