WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?

I find great satisfaction in items that are equal parts functional and decorative. I also love the typological element of seeing how each restaurant interprets the same quadrilateral form in their own way. I’ve dreamed of having a set of matchboxes that function as business cards for years and I am in the midst of designing one now.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?

Among my favorites is a matchbox from the @chicagoathletichotel's restaurant, the Cherry Circle Room, which is emblazoned with the bizarre and spellbinding symbol of a hand with fingers crossed enough times that the fingers look braided like challah. For the pragmatist, I’d send you in the direction of @theeastpole: the restaurant’s slender box contains the most responsive matches in my collection. The East Pole doesn’t skimp on quality as far as flammability is concerned.

WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?

I use my matches exclusively for lighting candles (my favorite is from an ingenious collaboration between @A24 and @joyastudio, with scents meant to evoke cinematic genres).
