WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
I started collecting matches accidentally. A friend gave me a matchbox from Canada and I never threw it out because I loved the design. I’m fascinated by design and branding and love how matchboxes encapsulate big ideas in small ways. Plus, I’m very much a minimalist and can never commit to hanging things in my apartment. My matchboxes felt very uncompromising. They’re interesting and colorful — without the commitment of placing a large frame on a wall.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
I’ve started picking up matchboxes from places I’ve travelled, and again as a minimalist, this is a great way of bringing a ‘souvenir’ home without bringing something larger into my place. My favorite ones are the ones I’ve picked from my favorite places (usually places where I had great meals, ha). @josephineestelle in NOLA is one of them. @thestandard East Village is another. The one from @chachaloungela in LA was an unexpected surprise. They have a vending machine with things like mini sombreros, post cards, underwear (!), and candy. I bought a pack of mango hi-chews, dipped my hand in to retrieve them, and the bottom was covered in matchboxes.
