WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
So, I didn’t actually light my first match until I was 20 or 21. I know. I was always just scared I’d burn myself or I’d drop the match…and my dad scared the shit out of me because when I was little he told me about some girls who were playing with matches and threw one out that they thought had been extinguished, but really wasn’t and they burned their whole kitchen down. Anyway, I’ve since realized you can put that fear to bed by simply running the match under water to completely extinguish it. I digress, but I love collecting matches because in a (relatively) cheesy way it reminds me that I can harness the things I was once afraid of. Also, I just love eclectic of a collection that matchbooks can provide, and I like to think about the people who were in possession of them before they made their way to me.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
I have two favorite matchbooks! The first is the Flower Shop matchbook from @urbanoutfitters. It was a giveaway from a pop-up that UO did in lower Manhattan a couple of years ago for their launch of artificial flowers. One of my best friends helped coordinate it and that night is one of my favorite memories of when I lived in NYC! My friend and I live states apart now as opposed to a ten minute walk so, we don’t see each other as often as we’d like. It’s also something I keep around to remind me of her, too. The other with the scribbles on it – they actually aren’t scribbles and is instead a sketch by an artist-friend of my parents’ that he did for the boutique hotel and restaurant he and his wife own in Hudson, NY. We took a trip up there as a family, and I fell in LOVE with the area – and the hotel, @hoteltivoli is so lovely – I highly recommend!
WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?
Funny enough, even though I don’t have any “mint-condition” matches, most of the time I’m finding them on travels, thrifting/yard sales, or Etsy I like to leave the matches unused for the most part. However, I always, always keep a box of matches in the bathroom. Maybe a TMI – but we all know what happens in there! I like to keep an assortment of things in the bathroom for when guests come over so that everyone has an option that makes them the most comfortable whether it’s something as incognito as a match or fragrant like @aesopskincare’s Post-Poo Drops.
