WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
I love collecting matches when I’m traveling; they’re perfect souvenirs for remembering a place and the personal experience I had there, and as a diehard carry-on traveler (who also lives in an NYC-sized apartment), I really appreciate their compact proportions.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
My favorite matches fall into two categories: those associated with a special time and event, like the ones from my sister’s wedding in Italy a decade ago; and matches that have a fabulous, considered design, like the cylindrical striped matches from NYC’s now-closed Le Turtle. It’s really quite extraordinary when you think about all the creative energy that goes into such a small parcel.
WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?
I’m actually quite snobby when it comes to matchboxes (YAY!) over matchbooks (NO!). I prefer the sturdiness of the box itself, as well as the matches inside. And overall, I just find them better-looking. Some of my favorite matchboxes never get used, especially if the matches themselves have a particularly unique appearance. Otherwise, you’ll find them scattered around my apartment, usually not far from a candle. And I’ll replenish my favorite used-up matchboxes with generic matches, too.
