WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
Nine years ago when I moved to New York, I had no idea where to go or what I was doing in general. Taking a matchbook on my way out from dinner or drinks was a way to collect places I liked. I was 22 and didn't feel like I was making my mark anywhere, but at least bars and restaurants could leave their mark on me. Amassing a bowl of matches was nice to look at. I thought of it as evidence that I was building a life.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
A Crosby Street Hotel matchbox is from the night I met my parents at the bar there and we saw my favorite celebrity, Sir Anthony Hopkins, from afar. The one from Nights and Weekends, which has sadly closed, is from the first time I really bonded with one of my best friends, talking for hours. Having a physical souvenir from a night like that is unusual, I feel lucky.
WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?
Mostly lighting candles and incense in my apartment. There are lots in my jacket pockets and the bottom of my purses, I'm not as diligent at putting them in the bowl as I used to be.
