WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?

I simply find them very pretty. I’m a recovering hoarder and since matches have a purpose I don’t feel guilty about collecting them. My parents have been collecting them since the ‘80s and my husband has a few too. I’ve somehow become the keeper of some of this joint collection that spans 4 decades. My family is spread all over the world—we’re French, Japanese, British, American and Armenian. I love how this collection reflects us. It’s also a great keepsake and conversation starter with my family. It got me to ask things like what were New York and Maxim’s like in the ‘80s for example.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?

The ones that have been with me forever! I’ve changed cities and homes so many times and I’ve lost so many things, I am amazed I still have so much of my collection. I love the ones that embody a time in my life. @deanstreettownhouse for my years in London, the @nomadmarrakech for when I lived in Marrakesh. I love the ones from my parents’ collection from places that I’ve been to years after they did. My dad gave me a matchbox from the ‘90s of the restaurant where I celebrated my civil wedding in 2021. We chose the restaurant without knowing it used to be my dad’s everyday spot when he used to work nearby.

WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?

I light my matches for candles or incense when I meditate but to be honest my favorites remain purely decorative on my coffee table or kept in boxes.
