WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?
Because they take me back to certain special places... bars, restaurants, and hotel lobbies. They feel old-world, and a little decadent (or at least, more decadent than a lighter). I love the smell of a freshly lit match. And, because they’re finite!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?
My friend Chiara Di Carcaci's @smokingjacket.london matches; they come in the funkiest striped boxes. Casablanca in Beirut; it's one of my favorite restaurants and their matchbox design is genius. Any super fancy, old-school hotel or restaurant—the cocktails tend to be strong, and service and people watching is at its best. These colorful matches I bought in 2016 from Mexico live in a tray that has moved around with me from Providence, to New York, Hong Kong, London and now back to New York. I have not lit a single one!
WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?
I actually try to avoid using them—I don't want them running out! Instead, they tend to live in my bedside table, in my handbags, and deep in my coat pockets. On occasion, and always exactly when I need it, I will find one in my pocket on a night out and use it to light a cigarette.
