Artist and Alzheimer’s Disease Advocate on a mission to capture clients’ special memories through artwork

WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?

I started collecting matchbooks after inheriting my dad’s collection. I loved how each matchbook had a story behind it - where he got it, what year it was, what the restaurant was like, why he was there… As an artist, I get a big kick out of the design and artwork, but the memories associated with each matchbook in my collection is why it has endured as a tradition for me and my family!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?

If I had to pick a favorite (which is very hard..), I think I’d have to go with @chateaustmartin. A close friend from high school got married at the Chateau a few years ago and we decided to make a vacation out of the trip. The entire experience was unforgettable (I should also note there were many matchbooks acquired on that trip. Merci, France!). My boyfriend and I hopped around the Côte d’Azur in a tiny car for a week before reuniting with our friends in Vence for the wedding. The wedding party and guests had the entire resort and Chateau for three days, which was surreal. By the afternoon of the wedding, we all felt like one big family - including the Chateau staff.. who we all hugged and exchanged contact information with before we left. Every time I look at the Chateau’s matches I can’t help but smile (and crave cheese…).

WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?

As weird as it may sound, I have a very strict no use policy with my matchbook collection. Instead of using them to light candles around the house, I display them in dishes, vases, shadow boxes… I even have a jar on my desk to remind me of all those special nights with friends and family. I’m now in the process of painting each matchbook from my collection and turning those into customizable prints. I’m very excited about it!
