MATCH OF THE DAY

WHY DO YOU LIKE AND COLLECT MATCHES?

I collect matches because they're a little piece of New York City that's free. They add a nice touch to my apartment, though I mostly look at them instead of using them to light candles—I'm afraid of fire. But these matches are more than just decorations. Each one holds memories of my favorite places, like shops, restaurants, and bars. I love how their logos tell a story with such attention to detail, considering the tiny space they have. It's a simple thing, but it inspires me.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONES AND WHY?

My absolute favorite matchbook in my collection is from @lecoucou_nyc, it holds a special place because it was the very first one I got. I appreciate the creativity and the way they thought outside the box by using the matches as the wings of the birds. Not only does it stand out from the rest, but when I take in my entire collection, my eyes are immediately drawn to it. There's something about it that pops and captures my attention effortlessly.

WHEN AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ENJOY YOUR MATCHES?

I store my matchbooks in a pair of glass square bowls I found while thrifting, a Nordic-inspired ceramic pink dish, and a La Maison Inondée Bowl from the MoMA Design Store. As a writer, I open the flap of each matchbook first thing to check out the little sayings and quotes embossed under the front, where nuggets of wisdom are usually hidden.
