Printed Rainbow, 2006 short film by Gitanjali Rao

Just in time for the start of 2023, we thought we'd share with you a delightful and heartwarming animated short film we came across thanks to a friend. Written, directed, and produced by Indian filmmaker Gitanjali Rao in 2006, Printed Rainbow is a fifteen-minute cartoon animation about a lonely old phillumenist woman who lives in a little flat with her cat and who uses her collection of matchbox covers to escape reality and travel to more adventurous and fantastical worlds. We know you might ask, "isn't that a rather depressing story line to kick off the New Year?" True, but this touching little masterpiece about life will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy by the end of the viewing. It truly is a testament to the beauty and value of phillumeny and a window into the multifaceted universe of any collector of mementos like matchboxes. Besides, Rao's animated short film was selected to premiere in the International Critic's Week at Cannes Film Festival in 2006, winning three awards in Cannes and 22 other international ones, ultimately garnering a lot of attention and appreciation from both the film critics and the animation industry alike. Enjoy the short and happy New Year our fellow phillumenists! Keep on collecting memories :)
